Michelle Le, a foreign volunteer teacher from America, has been in Sidoarjo from November 21 to 25, 2024.
Starting on November 21, 2024, Michelle Le arrived in Mlaten Village, Sidokepung, Buduran, and was hosted by her foster family, Mr. Agus Nono Hariadi, S.Pd.
On November 22, 2024, a welcoming ceremony was held at the school, attended by the Supervisor from the Sidoarjo Regency Education and Culture Office, Mr. Drs. Lambang Kurniawan, M.Pd.; the Head of Sidokepung Village; the Chairpersons of RT 24 RW 6 and RW 6; a representative of the military sub-district command (Babinsa) of Buduran; representatives from the Parents Association for Grades 7, 8, and 9; and several prospective foster families.
This partnership program with America was facilitated by the Peace Corps, serving as a liaison and ensuring all required steps were followed between the school and America, including administrative preparation, selecting foster families, and obtaining permission from the central government. This 5-day visit aimed to introduce Michelle to her foster family, the local community, and the school environment.
The program’s objective is to enhance motivation and enthusiasm in learning, particularly in English. If all requirements during this introductory visit are met, the volunteer will teach at SMPN 2 Buduran for two years, from 2025 to 2026. In Indonesia, 20 foreign volunteers are currently teaching across the country, with SMPN 2 Buduran being the only school in Sidoarjo to benefit from this exceptional collaboration.
On Monday, November 25, 2024, coinciding with the 2024 National Teachers’ Day commemoration ceremony, Miss Michelle Le attended the ceremony.
Miss Michelle shared her impressions:
“Thank you to all the students, the principal, and all the teachers. These five days in Sidokepung, Buduran, have given me incredible experiences. See you all next time,” said Miss Le. She also witnessed the presentation of awards to 10 outstanding educators and educational staff for 2024 by the Principal, Mrs. Wenny Arie Puji Susanti, S.Pd., M.Pd.
The ceremony proceeded solemnly under the guidance of the Principal of SMPN 2 Buduran. The 2024 National Teachers’ Day commemoration felt particularly special, with the presence of a foreign volunteer from America. Miss Michelle shared her memorable experiences during her five days at SMPN 2 Buduran, expressing hope to meet again during the upcoming program from 2025 to 2026. Students were enthusiastic about Miss Le’s presence.
This event inspired teachers to keep learning, sharing, and collaborating, leading students and educators to become exceptional individuals, ultimately building a strong Indonesia.
